A 1,400 km long seismic tomographic cross-section of the southwest US, that crosses northeast Arizona, shows dramatic velocity changes in the mantle that document the change from stable Colorado Plateau to more tectonically active areas adjacent.
The work by Stephen Grand at the University of Texas Jackson School of Geosciences and colleagues used the EarthScope USArray seismometers in the region as part of the study. AZGS and a partnership with UA, ASU, and NAU is trying to find funds to keep at least some of the 58 USArray stations in Arizona permanently after their temporary deployment ends in October 2008.
