Bob Hirsch [photo courtesy USGS] is stepping down as head of the USGS Water Resources Division effective May 12. The announcement from USGS director Mark Myer said Bob will move to the National Research Program to work on "trends in extreme stream flow conditions (floods and droughts) and their relationship to climate change and to other changes on the landscape."

Bob became Chief Hydrologist of the Water Resources Division in 1994. From August 1993 to March 1994, he served as the Acting Director of the USGS. He also was instrumental in the design and initiation of USGS programs including the National Water-Quality Assessment Program, Global Change Hydrology Program, and the Watershed Modeling Systems Program.
