Denison seeking to reopen Arizona Strip uranium mine

The Sierra Vista Herald reports that Denison Mines Corp. is waiting on a state air permit to re-open a uranium mine in the Arizona Strip about 20 miles north of the Grand Canyon. [right, Arizona 1 headframe. Credit, Denison Mines]

The company says they have sunk a shaft at the site, completed ventilation work and has agreements to sell the ore. Processing is likely to be done at a mill in southern Utah.

Opponents of this and other uranium projects in the region raise concerns about groundwater contamination, wildlife, and transportation of the uranium ore.

ADEQ says the air permit covers minimizing airborne dust from the mine and transport.
