Funding approved to digitize mining & mineral resource records

The Arizona Geological Survey has been chosen for an award of $41,529 to inventory, catalog, and start digitizing the extensive mining and mineral resource files amassed by the Arizona Dept. of Mines and Mineral Resources (ADMMR). AZGS is temporarily managing the assets of ADMMR following their bankruptcy in January. Gov. Brewer signed legislation formally consolidating the two agencies, effective July 1, 2011.

The funding will come from the U.S Geological Survey’s (USGS’s) National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) and requires matching funds from AZGS.

The Arizona Legislature appropriated $100,000 in one-time funds to help scan and digitize the ADMMR records, which we expect will be a 3-year effort or longer.
