Nomination for BLM director
Mineweb.com reports that former Nevada State BLM Director Bob Abbey has been nominated by President Obama to be the new director of the Bureau of Land Management.
They say Abbey has been endorsed for the director's post by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, the Public Lands Council, and 15 state and national livestock associations.
The BLM manages more land-256 million acres-than any other federal agency. The lands are primarily located in 12 western states. The Bureau administers 700 million acres of subsurface mineral rights throughout the nation.
BLM manages 12.2 million surface acres, and another 17.5 million subsurface acres in Arizona. [right, credit BLM]
