The National Academies released the first of five reports on America’s Energy Future as part of "a four-year project to explore energy technologies, providing authoritative estimates and analysis of the current and future supply of and demand for energy; new and existing technologies to meet those demands; their associated impacts; and their projected costs."
The report is now available for free PDF download. I've only skimmed through this briefly, but my sense is that it offers the classic National Academy analysis that will serve as a definitive resource.
