An exploratory well is expected to be drilled early in 2009 near Joseph City in east-central Arizona to evaluate geologic units for underground storage of carbon dioxide.
This is the first test of geologic sequestration of CO2 in Arizona. The project is run by WESTCARB - the West Coast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership and is taking place on APS property near the Cholla power plant.
AZGS is a member of WESTCARB.
A review of the project [right, map and cross section are from the presentation] was made to the annual WESTCARB meeting last month by project manager John Beyer from Lawrence Berkelely Lab. A public meeting is set for Nov. 12 in Holbrook.
The test will pump about 2,000 tons of CO2 into saline Paleozoic sediments at a depth of about 4,000 feet.
